EVERY CHILD DESERVES A CHANCE

In a heartfelt commitment to education and community development, National Handling Services (NHS) proudly celebrated a major milestone in its corporate social responsibility journey with the official commissioning of a newly constructed, fully furnished Early Childhood Development (ECD) classroom block at Majiji Primary School in Bubi District, Matabeleland North Province.

The handover, which took place on Monday, marks the sixth school to benefit from NHS’s ongoing efforts to give back to the community through meaningful and sustainable development initiatives.

The event was graced by several distinguished guests, including NHS Board Chairperson Advocate Godwin Nyengedza, Member of Parliament for Bubi Constituency Hon. Simelisizwe Sibanda, Bubi Rural District Council CEO Dr. Patson Mlilo, members of the NHS Board, Acting NHS CEO Mr. Phillip Rambakudzibwa, the NHS management team, Majiji Primary School staff, parents, and learners.

The new classroom block, consisting of two modern learning spaces, was designed to help ease overcrowding at the school, which currently has an enrolment of 863 pupils. In addition, NHS donated exercise books, pens, rulers and pencils for every child at the school. Speaking at the ceremony, Advocate Nyengedza emphasized the importance of education as a foundation for sustainable development and community upliftment.

“This classroom block stands as a testament to our belief in the potential of every child at Majiji Primary School,” said Adv. Nyengedza. “Education is the cornerstone of a thriving society—it fosters critical thinking, nurtures responsible citizenship, and builds productive communities.”

He further stressed that the initiative goes beyond mere charity; it represents a meaningful partnership in driving long-term progress.

“We are aware of the challenges facing rural schools—overcrowding, limited resources, and infrastructure gaps. NHS stands in solidarity with the dedicated teachers, committed parents, and determined pupils. No one should be left behind in the pursuit of quality education,” he added.

Advocate Nyengedza called upon the school and the local community to protect the new facility and foster a spirit of ownership and responsibility.

“To the parents—you are your children’s first teachers. Encourage consistent attendance and take pride in maintaining this space. And to the pupils—this is your classroom, your future. Whether you dream of becoming a doctor, teacher, engineer, or farmer, this space is where your journey begins.”

He also aligned the initiative with President Mnangagwa’s vision of inclusive national development.

“As His Excellency, President Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa always reminds us, ‘Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo / Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo’—a nation is built by its people. What we witness today is a true reflection of that spirit,” he said.

“Learning in a safe, well-equipped, and dignified environment transforms not only a child’s educational experience, but their entire future.”

Majiji Primary School Headmistress expressed gratitude to NHS for recognizing the needs of schools in remote areas where resources are often scarce.

Hon. Simelisizwe Sibanda, MP for Bubi Constituency, welcomed the development, noting that the classroom block will help ease pressure at the school and significantly improve learning conditions, especially for ECD learners.

“The commissioning of this block will ease overcrowding and improve learning outcomes. This is a timely and much-needed intervention, and we are truly grateful,” he said.

With projects like this, NHS continues to demonstrate its commitment to uplifting communities. Matabeleland North is now the sixth province to benefit from NHS’s ongoing corporate social responsibility efforts, with more to come as the organization expands its national impact.
